How to (Finally) Start Your Side Hustle

Side hustles are gaining popularity at lightning speed and there's no wonder why. They're helping people:
  • generate passive income

  • explore their passions

  • build new skills

  • create retirement plans

  • build safety nets in case they lose (or get sick of ) their 9-5.

And those are just some of the reasons.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a side hustle, here are five things that will help you start:

Every day, Chris Guillebeau, the New York Times bestselling author of The $100 Startup and The Happiness of Pursuit, posts a new episode of the Side Hustle School Podcast. Each episode features a successful side hustler's journey from idea to income in various industries.

What I love the MOST about this podcast is how short the episodes are. If you're starting a side hustle, you've definitely got other things going on, so your time is valuable. Chris obviously gets that and has structured his podcast to make sure you get supreme value in a short amount of time.

The bigger the task you take on at first, the more you’ll overthink it and allow your inner critic to step in. You know your inner critic. Whenever you have a burst of inspiration and are super excited to start something new, she chimes in to tell you that things must be perfect, that nobody’s going to buy from you and that you need be more "realistic".

The next time inspiration hits, take a baby step and don’t give your inner critic the time of day. Starting small is better than never starting at all.

If you're starting a side hustle, you likely have something else going on, maybe you're a parent, a full-time employee or you have another business that you dedicate full-time hours to, so it’s crucial that you manage your time and prioritize what's most important.

Sometimes that means saying no to your nightly Netflix binge with your honey or skipping Sunday brunch to work on your side hustle. The time you put in now will pay off when your side hustle is up, running and profitable AF.

It’s difficult to know the exact way to get things done when you first start out. Things will pop up that might require you to change course or do things a little bit differently than you thought you would. If you can't roll with the punches, it's going to take a lot longer for you to get to your end goal.

Obstacles will appear and when they do, trust that they're steering you in the right direction. Being inflexible is like putting on blinders to the things that you need to address to make your side hustle a success.

Energy is infectious. Surround yourself with other people who are working on side hustles or, even better, have successfully launched theirs. The more that you hang around those people, the more they'll remind you of what's possible. Nothing's more beneficial to your business than surrounding yourself with people that get you and your side hustle grind.

Mastermind groups are a great way to do this and you don't have to pay an arm and leg to join one. Save that money for your side hustle! I started a mastermind group in my hometown for free. If you're interested in doing the same, check out my Instagram post that breaks down the process.

That's it. Now go ahead and get started. Remember to avoid that pesky little inner critic that loves to stop you from taking action. The time is now!
